The biggest annual event in the Region’s cultural calendar is the multi-genre music festival Colours of Ostrava. The Region is also a renowned centre for sports. Since 1961 it has hosted the international Golden Spike annual athletics meeting, a favourite event of the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt. It is also the scene of numerous top competitive races – from extreme events (Beskydská sedmička, LH24, MAD RACE, Heroes race) to mountain stage races (Lysa Cup) and urban running events.
Ostrava’s long-term support for sporting events helped it to win the title European City of Sport 2014.
If you enjoy relaxing in the great outdoors, the Moravian-Silesian Region offers two beautiful mountain ranges – the Beskydy (within just 20 minutes of Ostrava) and the Jeseníky (around 2 hours away). The Region is also home to some classic spa resorts (Karlova Studánka, Lázně Darkov, Sanatorium Klimkovice) as well as luxury wellness spas at Čeladná and Ostravice.
The Region has 7 golf courses, over 2500 km of cycle routes, numerous historic castles and chateaux, fun for all the family at the Dinopark, great modern shopping malls (Nová Karolina, Outlet Arena Moravia, OC Breda and Weinstein, OC Frýda), a vibrant theatre scene, wonderful museums, and a rich range of stylish cafés to enjoy.
The hub of the Region’s cultural life is Ostrava’s spectacular Lower Vítkovice area – a former ironworks complex that has been revitalized with a Science and Technology Centre, the Bolt Tower (offering wonderful views from the top of a historic blast furnace), the multifunctional Gong auditorium (in a former gas-holder), a climbing centre and a range of other great attractions welcoming over 1.5 million people every year.
